ISAP LCA questionnaire

Dear Colleagues,
Please find in the Section “Documents” a brief questionnaire regarding LCA practice. The questionnaire is intended to not take more than 15-20 minutes to complete (you may send back any supporting documents with more detail rather than put a lot of detail in the questionnaire). I would like to receive your response by December 1, 2009 so that we can review them and summarize for TRB.
Please forward this to anyone you know who might be able to fill it out.
Thank you in advance and I am looking forward to your responses!
Best regards,
John Harvey
WG on LCA Chairman

International Workshop on Pavement Life Cycle Assessment

The University of California Pavement Research Center (UCPRC, Davis and Berkeley) hosted an International Workshop on Pavement Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on the University of California – Davis campus on May 5-7, 2010. The event was co-hosted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC-Berkeley and UC-Davis. The International Society for Asphalt Pavements Technical Committee on Asphalt Pavements and Environment (ISAP-APE) and the International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) were collaborators for the event.
More than 40 invited LCA and sustainability experts from around the world participated in the 2.5-day event, which examined a proposed framework for pavement LCA. Participants discussed proposed system boundaries and assumptions, identified knowledge gaps and potential areas of disagreement, and provided recommendations to the UC research team for improving the proposed framework and general LCA study practices.
The UCPRC project team intends to use the workshop results to improve the proposed LCA framework by several means, including the refinement of system boundaries and assumptions and by providing more transparency in the documentation of how pavement LCA studies should be performed. Final project documents will be posted for comment and critique by the pavement engineering and LCA communities (including through ISCP and ISAP-APE).
The focus of the proposed framework and documentation was for LCA studies that will be performed in California and then northern Europe, but it is expected that the workshop results will also be useful in the development and refinement of guidance documents for pavement LCAs performed in any region. This work is an objective of the Miriam project, which is a joint study on rolling resistance being undertaken by Caltrans and six European countries, and also an objective of a UC funded project to help local government in California develop more sustainable practices for pavement.
Questions concerning this study and workshop can be directed to: Dr. John Harvey at jtharvey@ucdavis.edu.

3rd APE ISAP Symposium – 16th August 2015 at Sun City

ISAP offers a forum through its Technical Committee TC APE, for international asphalt pavement technology enhancement, research and information exchange. Following the tradition of previous such events in Zurich and Fortaleza, this ISAP APE Symposium 2015 is linked to CAPSA2015, a locally established conference, aiming to enhance the international contributions to the events. ISAP TC APE also aims to dovetail with CAPSA 2015, bringing an international perspective of research and development, with creative, sustainable solutions for flexible pavements.
The ISAP APE Symposium programme has been developed to enable highly relevant papers with substantial findings to be presented in plenary sessions, accompanied by a broad cross section of pertinent subjects covered in parallel sessions. An ISAP APE poster session with selected, quality papers is aimed to stimulate lively discussions. Selected posters from ISAP APE Symposium will also be displayed at the CAPSA 2015 conference.
Symposium Chairmen: Kim Jenkins, Lucas Ebels, Manfred Partl (TC APE Chair), Gabriele Tebaldi (TC APE Secretary)

4th APE ISAP Symposium – November 20-21, 2017 – Tokyo

ISAP (International Society for Asphalt Pavement) is the most prestigious international organization to promote asphalt pavement technologies. The Technical Committee on Asphalt Pavement and Environment (APE) is one of the technical committees in ISAP and hosts this Symposium together with ISAP APE Symposium 2017 Organizing Committee in Japan Road Association Pavement Committee.
The ISAP APE Symposium 2017 provides a stage for exchanging information on a wide variety of topics related to asphalt pavements and environment. The Symposium has already been organized three times, 1st in Zurich, Switzerland, 2nd in Fortaleza, Brazil, 3rd in Sun City, South Africa, and the 4th Symposium will be held in Tokyo, Japan, for the first time in Asia.
The 4th Symposium will be held in conjunction with the Highway Technology Fair 2017 which is one of the big technology exhibitions on road maintenance in Asia. The Fair will present many good examples of pavement technology.
Pavement recycling technologies in Japan have about 50 years of history and new technologies such as cold pavements are also developed in view of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
The Symposium in 2017 will provide a very good opportunity to exchange the experience and new approaches on the positive effect of pavements on the environment and will foster progress and dissemination of sustainable pavement technologies in Asia and the rest of the world.

2018 ISAP Conference – Fortaleza, June 19-22, 2018

The International Society for Asphalt Pavements (ISAP) is a volunteer organization of professionals and experts in asphalt engineering whose goal is to share the latest in leading edge asphalt pavement technology worldwide.
The ISAP Conference on Asphalt Pavements has been the major source of state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice information in asphalt technology since its first meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA in 1962. The ISAP Conference meets every four years, and the 13th ISAP Conference on Asphalt Pavements will be held in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, on June 19-22, 2018.
The ISAP 2018 Conference will be an opportunity to examine the future directions of the asphalt paving industry in terms of key sustainable issues, such as long-term performance, environmental protection, socio-economic impacts, and political concerns. The ISAP 2018 Conference will address these critical issues in the four major areas of asphalt pavement engineering, i.e., design, materials, construction, and preservation.
